10th International Psiloritis Race

Crete, Greece’s largest island and birthplace of Zeus according to Greek mythology, will be hosting yet another edition of the popular running event “International Psiloritis Mountain Race” that will be welcoming mountain runners from across the world on 1-2 June 2019.

The “International Psiloritis Race, Run in the steps of Zeus” is one of the biggest summer mountain races held annually in Greece offering running professionals and enthusiasts a unique off road trail running experience in breathtaking Psiloritis Mt (also known as Ida), which is not only Crete’s highest mountain at 2.456m (or 8.057 ft) but also one of the most beautiful and unspoilt mountains across Greece.

The flagship event is of course the 35K trail race taking place on a varying terrain, namely dirt (16.5 km), tarmac (3 km) and path (15.5 km), for mountain and trail runners to test themselves. The race will start on Nida’s plateau – the highest plateau in Crete at 1.400 m – and ascend up to the mountain’s highest summit at 2.456m, where runners will be greeted with spectacular views across the island, before heading back down to the finish line at Kouroutes village.
The 10th International Psiloritis Mountain Race will also feature an 8.5K walking race and an 8.5K running race – both starting at Platania and finishing at Kouroutes village situated at the southwest foot of Psiloritis at an altitude of 510m – as well as a 2K children’s race between the historic villages of Fourfouras and Kouroutes.

Parallel events will include the popular pasta party followed by traditional Cretan dancing; both of which will take place at the Lyceum Club of Greek Women at the Venetian port of Rethymno on June 1st, with the main sports events taking place on June 2rd.

The event is organized by non for profit organisation "Race Psiloritis" in association with the Region of Crete and the Municipalities of Rethymno, Anogia and Amari.
