Narcissus and Echo and other metamorphoses

THEAMA (Theater for People with Disabilities) with already eight years of continuous presence in the performing arts and the professional empowerment of disabled performers, is presenting “Narcissus and Echo ….and other metamorphoses”, written by Vassilis Oikonomou and Eliana Periphanou and directed by Eliana Periphanou.

Performances are suitable for audiences 5-13 years old and will take place every Sunday at Apo Mixanis theater from October 21, 2018 and for the entire theatrical season (until 28th of April, 2019).

Three ancient Greek myths, “Narcissus and Echo”, “Arachne” and “Helios and Phaethon” are presented onstage with a common theme the element of metamorphosis, which is the ability to transform. The play can be used as a teaching and learning tool about the respect towards human diversity. According to Vassilis Oikonomou, founder of THEAMA, ‘It is time for performances within the current Greek society to address children and younger audiences about stereotypes and new perceptions on disability and diversity. For the first time, and based on our long experience in the performing arts, THEAMA communicates to everyone with honesty, simplicity and sensitivity such a topic’.

Five actors and actresses, two with kinetic disabilities - wheelchair users, one actor in the autism spectrum and impaired vision, and two non-disabled actors are a living proof that integration is possible through training, inclusive practices and concepts.

Three ancient Greek myths communicate valuable messages and use symbolism to relate to todays’ relationships and interpret human behavior.

“Narcissus and Echo” narrates the value of strength and weakness on one’s ability to look into their soul and listen to their own words. The myth of “Arachne” contemplates on the value of moderation in promoting one’s own capabilities and talents. “Helios and Phaethon” confirms the power of a promise being made and how inner wisdom can prevent frivolous decisions.

A repetition, an arrogant retort, or a hasty decision? How could these actions transform our lives?
The leading characters will bring their adventures to life, interact with the audience and will surrender to their destiny until their final transformation takes place. The journey into the world of metamorphoses starts here!
